Family Promise

Helping to feed families experiencing homelessness for a week.

Too many families experience homelessness.  We have a great resource in Berks County called Family Promise of Berks County which helps families experiencing homelessness for the first time with a place to stay, vocational and interview skills training, job hunting, and much more.  Family Promise partnered with congregations to serve as host sites (Atonement has shared its space since 2008) but with the coronavirus pandemic, they have changed to an Apartment Model in which families stay up to 90 days in an apartment or house that Family Promise rents.

Atonement will still be helping Family Promise families during the weeks of 4/3/21, 4/19/21, 7/12/21 and 7/19/21 by providing food.

Volunteers have the choice of preparing meals, getting groceries, donating grocery card gift cards or a hybrid of any or all 3. Providing gift cards may be easier for the families who have allergies, do not eat meat, gluten-free, etc. Since they will have kitchens, cooking also instills self-sufficiency and empowers the client to oversee something when much of their current situation leads them to feel powerless.

There will be 2 different drop-off locations and we will assist 3-4 families (12-15 people) like before. Atonement plans to provide groceries at the beginning of our host time, provide prepared meals on Mondays and Thursdays, and donate grocery gift cards to cover what we forget! Drop-offs will be contactless and volunteers will not be engaging with clients directly due to the COVID-19 virus, for everyone’s safety.
